STUDENT POETRY CONTESTS 2010

1. THE HOLCOMB COLLEGE AWARD  (college/university students and college-bound grades 11-12)  Offered by J. Paul Holcomb, 17th President of PST, for a poem of 28 lines or fewer. Any form, any subject. First place winner will receive a one-year student membership in Poetry Society of Texas.

2. THE POETRY IN THE ARTS, INC. COLLEGE AWARD  (college/university students and college-bound grades 11-12) Offered by Peggy Zuleika Lynch, Founder & Director of Poetry in the Arts, Inc. for a poem of 28 lines or fewer on any subject.

3. THE LIFE IS GOOD PRIZE  (college/university students and college-bound grades 11-12 ) Offered by L.D. Carter for a poem that celebrates the joy of living. Any form with no more than 28 lines. First place winner will receive a one-year student membership in Poetry Society of Texas.

4. THE EAKIN PRIZE (college/university students and grades 11-12) Offered in memorial to Edwin M. Eakin by Budd Powell Mahan, for a poem of 28 lines or fewer, any subject/form.

5. THE COURAGE AWARD  (college/university students and college-bound grades 11-12) Offered by Charlotte Renk of Athens for a poem of 28 lines or fewer. Any form, any subject. First place winner will receive a one-year student membership in Poetry Society of Texas.

6. THE POETRY IN THE ARTS, INC. HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS AWARD (grades 11-12) Offered by Peggy Zuleika Lynch, Founder & Director of Poetry in the Arts, Inc. for a poem of 28 lines or fewer on any subject.

7. THE MILDRED VORPAHL BAASS AWARD (grades 11-12) Offered by Nancy Baass in honor of her mother, Mildred Vorpahl Baass, Poet Laureate of Texas, 1993-1994 & 1994-1995 for the best poem on any subject, in any form. 28-line limit.

8. THE NATIONAL FEDERATION OF STATE POETRY SOCIETIES, INC. AWARD (grades 11-12) Offered by Nancy Baass,  President of the National Federation of State Poetry Societies, Inc., 2008-2010 for the best poem on any subject, in any form. 28-line limit.

9. THE SCHWARTZ AWARD  (grades 10-12) Offered by Annette Schwartz of Houston for the best poem on any subject and in any form with a limit of 28 lines.

10. THE POETRY SOCIETY OF TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL AWARD  (grades 9-12) Offered by Poetry Society of Texas for a poem of no more than 28 lines on any subject, any form.

11. THE WHITNEY M. MONTGOMERY AWARD  (grades 9-12) Established in the will of Estelle Stewart in memory of Whitney M. Montgomery, for the best poem on any subject and in any form. 28-line limit.

12.THE SHADY HILL AWARD  (grades 9-12). Offered by J. Paul Holcomb for the best poem of 28 lines or fewer about environmental awareness. First place winner will receive a one-year student membership in Poetry Society of Texas.

13. THE JACK E. MURPHY HIGH SCHOOL PRIZE  (grades 9-12) Offered by Freeda Murphy in memory of her husband, the 9th President of the Poetry Society of Texas, for the best poem of no more than 28 lines on any subject and in any form.

14. THE CASTLE PRIZE (grades 9-12). Offered by Birma Castle of Beaumont, TX, for a poem of 28 lines or fewer, in any form, on the subject “First Impressions.” First place winner will receive a one-year student membership in Poetry Society of Texas.

15. THE HUMOR AWARD  (grades 9-12) Offered by Ann M. Moorhead of Wichita Falls, TX, for the best humorous poem, in good taste, any subject, free verse or rhymed, 12 lines or fewer.

16. THE STODGHILL HIGH SCHOOL AWARD  (grades 9-12) Offered by Pat Stodghill for a free verse poem on any subject. 28-line limit.  First place winner will receive a one-year student membership in Poetry Society of Texas.

17. THE APPRECIATION PRIZE  (grades 9-12) Offered by Linda Banks to honor Budd Powell Mahan for his dedication to The Poetry in Schools program. Any subject, any form, 28-line limit.

18. THE SONNET AWARD (grades 9-12) Offered by Peggy Wood in memory of her father: Alvin R. Volk, HS English teacher. A Petrarchan (Italian) or Shakespearean sonnet. Subject: A beloved pet.

19. THE ACORNS TO OAKS  AWARD  (grades 9-12) Offered by Jimmie L. Radliff for a poem of 28 lines or fewer/any form. Subject: Conquering negatives with positive outlook.

20. THE SURPRISE AWARD  (grades 9-12) Offered by Yolande Gottlieb of Conroe for a poem on any subject and in any form. 28-line limit.  First place winner will receive a one-year student membership in Poetry Society of Texas.

21. THE DALLAS PRIZE  (grades 9-12) Offered by Budd Powell Mahan for a poem on any subject and in any form, no more than 28 lines.

22. THE LAUREL CROWN FOUNDATION AWARD   (grades 9-12) Offered by The Laurel Crown Foundation Board for a poem on any subject and in any form, with 28 lines or fewer. First place winner also receives a one-year student membership in Poetry Society of Texas.

23. THE VALERIE MARTIN BAILEY AWARD   (grades 9-12) Offered by Valerie Martin Bailey for a poem on any subject and in any form, with 28 lines or fewer. First place winner also receives a one-year student membership in Poetry Society of Texas.

24. THE POET’S NORTHWEST AWARD  (grades 9-12) Offered by Poets Northwest of Houston for the best poem in any form with a limit of 28 lines. Subject:  My Hero

25. THE HELEN JONES PRIZE (grades 9 -12) Offered from PST Student Awards funds to honor gifted poet and dedicated teacher, Helen Jones of Fort Worth.  Helen taught Language Arts at Paschal High School until her death in 2009.  Any subject, any form, limit of 28 lines. 

26. ANNETTE’S AWARD  (grades 8-12) Offered by Annette Schwartz of Houston for the best poem on any subject and in any form with a limit of 28 lines.

27. THE HOLIDAY AWARD  (grades 6-12) Offered by Peggy Wood for a poem, any form, about a holiday which is important, 28 line maximum.

28. THE HONESTY/INTEGRITY AWARD  (grades 6-12) Offered by Peggy Wood for a poem in any form addressing the subject of honesty. No more than 28 lines. 

29. THE NANCY BAASS AWARD (grades 9-10) Offered by William C. Lo Pinto in honor of Nancy Baass, President of the National Federation of State Poetry Societies, Inc., 2008-2010 for the best poem on any subject, in any form. 28-line limit.

30. THE POET LAUREATES OF TEXAS AWARD, DEDICATED TO ALL WHO HAVE SERVED (grades 9-10) Offered by Mildred Vorpahl Baass, Poet Laureate of Texas, 1993-1994 & 1994-1995, for the best poem in any form. Subject: Texas. 28-line limit.

32. THE SIEGEL JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL AWARD  (grades 7-9) Offered by Suzie Siegel in honor of her mother, Marcella Siegel, 15th President of the Poetry Society of Texas, for the best poem of 16 lines or fewer. Any subject, any form. 

33. THE RUTH E. REUTHER PRIZE  (grades 7-9) Offered by Alma Grace Richardson in memory of her mother, Ruth E. Reuther, the 1987 Poet Laureate of Texas,.  Any form, on the subject Texas, 28 lines or fewer. First place winner also receives a one-year student membership in Poetry Society of Texas.

34. THE FERGUSON PRIZE (grades 7-9). Offered by Doris K. Ferguson of Houston for a poem on any subject, any form, 28-line limit. First place winner also receives a one-year student membership in Poetry Society of Texas.

35. THE HOCKADAY SCHOOL BANNER AWARD (grades 7-8). Offered by The Hockaday School/Banner for a poem on any subject, any form, 28-line limit. Hockaday Students may not enter.

38. THE VAIDA STEWART MONTGOMERY AWARD  (grades 6-8) Established in the will of Estelle Stewart in memory of Vaida Stewart Montgomery for the best poem any subject, any form, 28-line limit.

39. THE PRESIDENTS PRIZE (grades 6-8). Offered by Budd Powell Mahan in honor of PST's Presidents, for a poem of 28 lines or fewer, any subject, any form.

51. THE FREDERICK J. MCCARTHY MEMORIAL AWARD  (grades 5-6) Offered by Lavern McCarthy of Blair, Oklahoma for a poem on any subject, in any form. 28 line-limit. Prize includes a one-year membership in Poetry Society of Texas for the first place winner.

57. THE INSPIRITRY AWARD  (grades 4-5) Offered by Anne McCrady of Henderson for a poem in any form with 28 lines or fewer.  Subject: My Dream for the World First place winner also receives a one-year student membership in Poetry Society of Texas.

58. THE SAN PATRICIO COUNTY STUDENT AWARD (grade 4) Given by Virginia Frey for a poem in any form, 28 lines or fewer. Subject: A domestic or wild animal

59. CHARLIE’S PRIZE (grades 3-5) Sponsored by Barbara and John Blanks, in honor of Charlie, the best dog ever. Subject: Dogs (no cruelty), any form, no more than 15 lines.

60. THE HOCKADAY LOWER SCHOOL ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES AWARD (grades 3-4) Offered by The Hockaday Lower School of Dallas for the best poem dealing with the theme of environmental issues. 28 lines maximum. Hockaday students may not enter.

61. THE POETRY SOCIETY OF TEXAS ELEMENTARY AWARD  (grades 1-3) Offered by PST for a poem of no more than 12 lines on any subject and in any form.

63. THE MARION CRUME POETRY AWARD  (grades 1-3) Offered by The Hockaday Lower School of Dallas for the best poem on any subject and in any form. 28 lines maximum. Hockaday students may not enter.

64. THE UNITED DAY ELEMENTARY POET AWARD   (grades 1-3) Offered by Hilda Trevino of Laredo for a poem on any subject and in any form, not longer than 28 lines.

65. THE COSBY AWARD   (grades 1-3) Offered by Shirley & Bob Cosby of Emory for a poem on any subject in any form, 28 lines or fewer.

66. THE POETRY IN THE ARTS, INC. - FOUND POETS - AWARD (grades K-3) Offered by Peggy Zuleika Lynch, Founder & Director of Poetry in the Arts, Inc. for a poem cooperatively created by the students of a single class. The prize will be given to the entire class. The entry should be teacher assisted, but with a minimum of direction. No more than 18 lines. Any subject, any form.

THERE IS NO FEE TO ENTER
