PROCEDURES FOR ENTERING CONTESTS

Entries must be prepared according to the rules and instructions listed here. All entries must be received by MARCH 1, 2010. Entries will be mailed to judges who will have the copy with no identification. Judges will select the top poems. The Poetry Society of Texas publishes first place winning poems in their anthology STUDENT AWARD WINNERS 2010, and selected poems may be entered in the Manningham Awards and Student Award of the National Federation of State Poetry Societies, Inc. ELIGIBILITY OF POEMS

  1. A poem must be the original work of the entrant.
  2. A poem must be titled, or the contest chairperson will title it. Haiku are excepted.
  3. A student may enter only one poem in each contest in which eligible.
  4. A poem may be entered in only one contest.
  5. A poem currently entered in any other contest may not be entered.
  6. All poems must be written by a single student, unless exception is stated in the contest description.
  7. A poem that has been published or accepted for publication, except in school publications, may not be entered.
  8. A poem may be no longer than 28-lines unless shorter line length is stated.
  9. Poems must be in English.
  10. Entrant must be a student in a school in Texas. College students who are native Texans may enter regardless of school location.
  11.  No electronic submissions will be accepted. 

PREPARATION OF ENTRIES   

1. Submit 2  (two) typed (no unusual fonts, Times Roman recommended) or hand-printed copies on 8½”x11" white paper.

2. In the upper left corner of both copies place the number and name of the contest entered.

3. In the upper right corner on one copy only place the following information:

[please designate Mr., Ms., and give teacher’s first & last name.]

NOTE: A student may elect not to use his/her home address. A school address MUST appear on the identification page for the purpose of winner notification. The National Federation of State Poetry Societies and the Manningham Poetry Awards require this information. Winning poems with more than 50 characters per line may be edited to fit into the anthology.

4. Poems will not be returned to authors, and winners will be asked to bring a copy of their winning poem to the Student Awards Festival ceremony to be held in spring 2010. 

5. Do not staple the poem copies together. The copy without identification goes to the judge.

TEACHERS, You may elect to send your students’ poems in one envelope. Please sort poems by contest number.

First, 2nd & 3rd Place winners receive a certificate. These winners are notified by mail and invited to read their winning poem(s) at the Student Awards Festival. Each winner attending will receive a free copy of the anthology published by Poetry Society of Texas with recognition given to all winners, participating schools and their teacher sponsors. Additional copies are available for $7.00 each.
